I'm certainly not an expert in this department since I don't use tampons, but I've read extremely good reviews about Playtex Gentle Glide Tampons, especially the Slender Applicator Multi-Pack. It's 15% slimmer than before and has the usual 360 degree protection that Playtex allegedly guarantees in its commercials. Plus it has a double-layer, cross pad design for extra leak protection.
